Owning your own content with a website
What do I mean by owning your own content?
You write it; it’s yours in terms of copyright, but what happens if Meta locks you out? If Twitter goes down or you lose your password or access?
We’ve lost the social story of what happened during the pandemic.
And 2,500 followers. Ouch!
This is a quote from a recent article in The Guardian, which featured a question on how to unlock a Facebook account. A local cooking school created a group on the platform during the lockdowns and began to share advice.
They gained 2,500 followers and lost them. The platform drove the page out to those who needed it, which worked until the owner was locked out. They appealed against the decision by Meta to close the account, and this was declined.
It was only the intervention of the Guardian journalist that got the account open again. The cause was a security breach on the connected Instagram account. Meta (the owners of Instagram and Facebook) advised users to follow their security protocol, including two-factor verification, to avoid this.
It happens a lot. There are many stories of people who are suddenly frozen mid-campaign and lose traction.
There’s another solution.
Own your content!
Social media provides a free service on which to publish content. If that content is lost for security reasons or comprised data, you may not get it back. Placing your content on your website and sharing it on social media is one way to keep your own work safe.
It’s yours to do with as you wish, providing it’s original. You can
Create a blog of advice that’s always accessible, it doesn’t disappear into a fast-moving timeline
Share out to social media and keep the original writing
